In 1979, in an article published on the Flash Art magazine, the Italian art critic Achille Bonito Oliva proposed a new trend in visual art - called Transavantgarde, or "beyond the avant-garde" - which would refuse conceptualism, and was meant to be more emotional and symbolic. Bonito Oliva's manifesto was influential, and the 1980s were the years of key Italian Transavantgarde artists like Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nicola De Maria, and Mimmo Paladino.
.:. The celebrations for the 150 years from the unification of Italy have provided the opportunity to organize this exhibition, which is the first Transavantgarde collective ever held in Milan. Visiting is an engaging experience - fun even for those who do not appreciate figurative art.

Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, the founder of the illustrious house museum (which is one of the most prestigious in the world) was, on the maternal side, a Trivulzio, one of Milan's oldest, most cultivated and most endowed families.
.:. In his frequent travels in Italy and abroad, his knowledge of the arts was enhanced and he purchased numerous art works - his acquisitions reveal his particular taste for Italian paintings from the Renaissance to the 18th century. He also became very interested in applied arts such as arms, porcelains, tapestries, jewelry and antiques.
.:. The Poldi Pezzoli collection was gradually gathered together in the building which still houses it today, and this exhibition tells the story.

Since the history of design can be told in different ways, in December 2007 the Triennale - Milan's design institute par excellence - opened a new museum deliberately bound to change periodically.
.:. The current fourth edition - which is subtitled "Men, ideas, businesses and paradoxes of Italian design" - lists people, companies and projects that helped create the system of Italian design since the second world war and determine the success of the Salone del Mobile in the world.

It is now possible to see again the seven huge towers devised and mounted at the Hangar Bicocca in 2004 by German artist Anselm Kiefer. The imposing ex-industrial structure, renovated by Milanese architect Vittorio Gregotti for Pirelli Real Estate, unveis a world which is both sacred and profane, heavenly and cabalistic, dark and dazzling.
.:. Beyond their magic, technically speaking the seven towers are made of reinforced concrete and lead, decorated with varying shades of color, lettering, bits of paper and other intriguing elements.
.:. If you don't have a car, take bus n. 87 from the Central Station.
