Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, the founder of this illustrious museum-home which has served as a point of reference for other important museum-homes in Europe and the US (Frick Collection, Jacquemart-André, Wallace Collection, Isabella Stewart Gardner) came from one of Milan's oldest, most cultured and most well-endowed families. The Poldi Pezzoli collection was gradually gathered together in the building which still houses it today.
The museum, which has been open to the public since 1881, exhibits important paintings, weapons and armour, jewels, carpets, textiles, lacework, furnishings, sundials, sculptures and Murano glass.
There are paintings by Pollaiolo, Botticelli, Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Piero della Francesca, Cosmè Tura, Foppa, Solario, Luini, Boltraffio, Cesare da Sesto, Fra' Galgario, Bergognone, Guardi, Canaletto, Tiepolo.
