A few months after its reopening to the public - itself an interesting public-private initiative - the Royal Villa in Monza takes official part in the Expo 2015 celebrations. Aptly, paintings and sculptures gathered throughout Europe show how the Bel Paese has attracted foreign artists and intellectuals since the 16th century. Towns like Rome, Naples, Venice and Florence were - and are - regarded as places to be, for those aiming for recognition in polite society.
.:. Some exhibited works, by Cranach the Elder or Van Dyck for instance, are exceptional. Yet it's the forest, not the trees, what really matters. A final Kiefer may remind of how much Italy is still regarded as a destination - by refugees, not only by glitterati.
