.:. discover / Swiss freedom
March 22 through July 5, 2015
Tue-Fri 10am-12 noon and 2-5pm, Sat-Sun 10am-6pm, open on public holidays
The only Italian-speaking Canton in Switzerland, the Ticino was a place of welcome for Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876), founding father of modern anarchism. A sort of "cultural smuggling" - as Pro Helvetia, patron of the exhibition, calls the phenomenon today - was in fact operational between the Ticino and Lombardy, also involving anarchic ideas, writings and activists.
.:. Switzerland - at least until the expulsion of a group of anarchists from Lugano in 1895 - was considered a nation of freedom amidst less tolerant states. A hill above the town of Ascona is still called Monte Verità (Truth) because of the important community of utopians it hosted, Karl Gustav Jung and Hermann Hesse among them.
.:. The exhibition retraces this history, thanks of documents, prints, and memories. Opening on Saturday, March 21, 6pm.
