August 1st through 31, 2017
August is the month when most of the Milanese go on holiday. Signs saying
Chiuso per Ferie, closed for vacation, are posted almost everywhere and things to do and see in town are few and far between. Assorted open-air spots - the
Sforza Castle among them - provide backdrops for a few concerts and performances.
.:. The city is even more deserted around August 15, called
Ferragosto. When Ferragosto comes, as this year, next to a weekend, even the diehards surrender and abandon Milan.
.:. Some notable exceptions. Through August, visitors enjoy nearly every day all the
Triennale attractions, the
Torre Branca, and the
Poldi Pezzoli museum. which is free on Wednesday 9 and Wednesday 23. The
Brera National Art Gallery, too, is open in August, and the Gallerie d'Italia are open free on the Ferragosto day.
.:. Even the exhibition ground where the
Expo 2015 was in full blossom two years ago can be
visited again.
