After the Expo 2015 has closed down on October 31, the first major exhibition to open up in Milan is dedicated to one of the most iconic old masters in the town's history. Francesco Hayez (1791-1882) has entered the collective imagination as the greatest romantic 19th-century Italian painter. He's done so mainly thanks to the various versions of Il bacio (The Kiss), a work so sweet that it can look sickly. The version of The Kiss that Hayez produced in 1861 for the Mylius family was auctioned at Sotheby's in 2008 for 416,000 pounds.
.:. More than to love scenes, in fact, Hayez very often dedicated its paintings to historical events, like the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, or almost historical ones, like Romeo and Juliet (pictured).
.:. An exhibition on the same theme could be visited during the Expo at the Pinacoteca di Brera.
