Western eyes may look at Manga as plain contemporary comics. They are, however, deeply rooted in the Japanese art traditions, and have been so for a long time.
.:. Takashi Murakami (Itabashi, Tokyo, 1962) has fast-forwarded the debate, developing the Manga world into a range of original artworks - painting, sculpture, animated movies, merchandise, and Vuitton handbags - that has made him an extremely successful entrepreneur. His works are commercialized by leading art firms like Gagosian, Christie's or Sotheby's.
.:. Murakami's works are exhibited in Milan in the Sala delle Cariatidi, or Hall of Caryatids, the Royal Palace's ballroom which was bombed during WW2, and purposefully kept in a half demolished state.
