The son of an architect from Trentino bearing his same name, for many years Ettore Sottsass (Innsbruck 1917-Milano 2007) identified himself as Ettore Sottsass jr. This was an elegant sign of deference towards his previous generation, but Sottsass was actually never at a lower rank than anyone else. His ingenious creativity, intellectual curiosity, integrity and acumen, joined by an ability to work along big companies apparently very distant from his spirit - though one of these big companies was called Olivetti - made him a special, probably unique case in the history of Italian design.
.:. A ponderous new monography has just been published on Sottsass by Phaidon and Skira. The volume's public presentation was attended by some of the most influential survivors of the Italian design of the 1980s. Yet, a mini exhibition of objects by Sottsass can still be visited for a while in the same premises, and it is as small as wonderful.
