| The armoury at Museo Poldi Pezzoli |
theoretical
notes by Arnaldo Pomodoro, 1998
I have been commissioned to provide the "salle d'armes" of the Poldi
Pezzoli Museum with a new structural and scenic setting, to take
the place of Perrone di San Martino's histrionic ambience. The type
of objects displayed in the room set it apart, in a certain way, from
the rest of the museum's art works. And its outstanding exhibits themselves
form a relatively varied and in part fragmentary group. This calls
- in my opinion - for a single, all-embracing reference to the "context" of the collection, that will also attract visitors'
attention. And this contextual approach must reflect the very function
of the Poldi Pezzoli as a museum and art gallery.
These are the reasons why I have decided to:
a) set the cases in which the arms are displayed against the walls
(for which I have used pietra serena) along the whole length
of the room (15m);
b) build an arched vault, in order to give the place a more emphatic
sense of space; and a floor of polished pietra serena;
c) place on the vaulted ceiling an inventive composition for which
my point of reference has been the Gothic of 16th century Prague (the
armour exhibited dates from this period to the 18th century); for
inspiration I looked to Karel Plicka's book "Praha ve fotografii"
(Prague, Orbis, 1971).
In my composition, almost like an old fresco, I feel choice of material
(lead-covered timber) and colour (burnished silver) have given the
work added value; my style has moreover always been influenced by
archaic references, as typical of abstract Expressionism.
The room can therefore be described as: Armoury - with historical
"ornaments" on its ceiling by Arnaldo Pomodoro.
I believe I have thus connected this "other" place and its exceptional
exhibits, in the separate wing on the left of the entrance, with the
rest of the Museum's rooms, rather than keep it segregated and strictly
object-focused. As is evident in my work, I have always attributed
importance to the relationship between art and craftsmanship, of which
these exhibits are exceptional examples.
I attach a model in 1:20 scale and a few preliminary drawings; my
interior design scheme will be completed with a central display case, and the last details finalized on the
basis of the observations of the museum's councillors.
I am honoured to have received this commission, which I shall execute
with the greatest care.
