The armoury at Museo Poldi Pezzoli

The armoury at the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan - one of the world's most prestigious museum-homes, in the Monte Napoleone fashion district - has been opened on May 31 2000. It was designed by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro.

The first armoury in the building, mounted in 1848 to a project by the museum's founder, Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, was destroyed during an air raid in 1943. When the museum re-opened to the public after the World War Two, the collection had been reorganized and installed in a new room to the left of the entrance.

Now, one hundred and fifty years since the collection was first exhibited, it has been provided with a setting more in keeping with its importance.

Arms were Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli's first great passion, and collecting such items was an established tradition among Lombardy's noble families. The oldest invoices for purchases of arms are dated 1846 but documentary evidence exists of earlier dealings with armourer Carlo Maria Colombo, in 1844.
